Dec. 8, 1870 Asa Hutchinson to John Benjamin-1823

Chicago
Dec. 8, 1870
Dear Dr. Benjamin,
Your letter & list of notes were duly received at Rockford, Ill on our arrival there, for which I return you my sincere thanks.  We have had beautiful weather on our trip and good houses of old and new friends.  We go to Lincoln 150 miles away tomorrow and return to the city next Tuesday the 13th inst.
Dr. I want you to have especial care that things go right at our farm in our absence.  John writes me that there is a man that will come 2 work with him for $5 per month and board.  If you think best, have him employed.  John could work the team & the other man chop & tend the cattle, but don’t hire a Sheik.
I hope the kitchen is completed & plastered and that Mrs. Summer is rehired.
Tell Mr. Adams I will write him in a few days.
John wants his wife to come to the farm to live, but it will not do.  That was not in the arrangement, but you will not say anything to him about it , only that it will not be convenient under present circumstances.   Private – John’s wife will not do well and if John is dissatisfied you can engage another man to fill his place.   Please write me whether John is doing things faithfully & honestly.  I don’t want him unless he is true.
Please write once a week your impressions & report progress on Hopan Farm.
Our expenses are enormous traveling but we have me a warm reception therefore.  Mr. Griggs of Rockford Register inquired after you  and __ he was a warm friend of.  I gave him a long ___ of your pioneering in Hopan Valley.  He wished to be remembered to you.
Dr. please appraise me of what’s going on and advise from time to time and I will reciprocate your kindness.  I may run home in January and I may not come till Feb.  Keep me posted.  I have offered that lot near P Office to Mr. (Quorts) Tailer, he thought he would want it.  Have Mr. Adams pay Mr. Schrader for shingles by order on ___ delinquent state signers.
Regards to your family all & children.  And truly yours,
Asa B. Hutchinson
