John Benjamin was born in England in 1823. In 1849, at the age of 26, he immigrated to America with the goal of seeking opportunities in the new world and improving the life of his family. During his immigration and eventual settlement in Hutchinson, Minnesota, John saved many personal letters that were written by and to him. These letters, the subject of this web site, bring to life his immigration and the life of others during this courageous adventure. Dear gents, yours of Feb. 13 last appeared in the Tribune of the 28 of that month came to me well prostrated by bad cold which I have but just recovered while confined to my room.  I communed to letters two the Tribune, but so many ideas rushed forward in my event that I gave them up & decided to write you a short letter.  It is to inform you that I am __ of your __ was a ___.  I Christine Burkston left for the west in 26, have been a mechanic twenty years in the state of NY, __ 5 years in Wisconsin.  I have a good hydraulic power ___ that I bought in 37, ¾ of a mile from Michigan Lake & the same distance from the city of Sheboygan.   It is yet in a state of nature I occupy the lane on each side of the power.  I should be most happy to see you ___ your business flourishes in this new and growing country   __ __ is good but of all __ of mechanics business Boston Rocking Chairs I think will take the ___.  The best mechanics at that branch of business are in the Connecticut River above or about Greenfield.  Those is men ___ fully competent to draft the approve machining of __ of all kinds. If you could bring with you the following laborers & machinists they would find employment that would pay well. They would be in a healthy county where they would have an opportunity to see & learn more of the west than they can now .  Pay for say one man or more that is master of the trade at Boston
